Tomataki
Tomataki Santorinis
The famous Santorini small tomato, known as “Tomataki Santorinis”, is a unique variety that flourishes thanks to the arid soil of the island. It is unique of its kind.
It came from Suez and adapted easily to the volcanic soils of the island. In 1875 I. Kiriakos, a folklorist from Thira, described the Santorini small tomato as a golden apple.
From the 18th until the 20th century it was a leader of the island’s cultivation. It is a small fruit variety, with thick leaves, it is shrubby and sometimes produces fruit the size of a cherry. Its skin is hard and therefore has a unique taste.
The famous santorini tomato paste is also produced from this variety of tomato.
